Bichon Frises physical characteristics include a double coat of loosely curled hair and a plumed tail. The outer coat is textured and not as soft as the fine and silky undercoat. The undercoat is about 3-4 inches in length and is fine, silky and nearly hypoallergenic. Their tail is curved and rests over is back. The Bichon Frise's eyes are black or brown and inquisitive in nature. The breed standard states, "Eyes of any color other than black or dark brown are a very serious fault and must be severely penalized." Bichon Frises are white in color normally with some shades of apricot, cream or buff on the body or around the ears. Too much off any color besides white is a fault. For showing, the Bichon Frise should either be longhaired with clippings only at the feet and muzzle or clipped like a poodle. They should be clipped for a rounded look.

Bichon Frises Breeders - Bichon Frises are believed to be a cross between a Poodle and a Spaniel. The Barbet or the Water Spaniel gave the Bichon Frise its name. The Barbet developed a smaller form and turned into the Barbichon or Bichon. There is another version as far as the origin of the name goes. Bichonner is a French word and translates as curl.
The Bichon Teneriffe is one more name, which refers to the breed. After the 1st World War, French and Belgian breeders wanted to rename the Bichon Teneriffe as the name only involved its Spanish origin. Spanish sailors could have brought this breed to the Canary Island. It gained tremendous popularity in royal Spanish and French circles after it was re-imported to Europe.
